What's In a Name?
If it is your Domain Name- quite a bit really. Let's start with a true definition. Here is the Wikipedia version:
A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. Domain names are used in various networking contexts and for application-specific naming and addressing purposes. In general, a domain name identifies a network domain, or it represents an Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such as a personal computer used to access the Internet, a server computer hosting a website, or the web site itself or any other service communicated via the Internet. That's a lot of tech talk.. here is a simple description. Your Domain name is the name of your website. It is different than a URL(pronounced "U"-"R"-"L") the URL usually has extensions that direct a visitor to a specific page or item. So there is some difference.
Gone are the days when you could get a single word Domain name. Most of those have been snatched up for decades and are held hostage for some way $eriou$ prices, but you can still get creative and come up with a good one for your project or company.
Think about your company name, your event name, your purpose, mission and see what you come up with. There are also a wide variety of extensions available now. .com and .org are the ones most people are familiar with but here are some others commonly used: .COM, .CO, .INFO, .ORG, .NET, .ME, .MOBI, .US or .BIZ
New-- very important. Stand back and read your selection before making that purchase. Combining words may seem like a great idea, but here are some unfortunate choices where the word blends could change the meaning of what visitors will expect:
SpeedofArt.com looks totally different on the address bar- more like SpeedoFart. Maybe get a friend to give it a look too :)
OldMansHaven or OldManShaven? You decide.
